Picturesque mountain villages at the foot of the mighty Grimming Mountains

Recreational island and climatic health resort on the high plateau in the middle of the Styrian Enns Valley

The sunny Mitterberg high plateau, which is also known as the pearl of the Enns Valley, and the Grimming, the highest free-standing mountain in Europe, characterize the landscape of the municipality of Mitterberg-St. Martin.

The Mitterberg, which gives the municipality its name, so to speak, was probably formed 20,000 - 30,000 years ago after the end of the second ice age. As the ice retreated further and further over time, huge masses of rock remained and formed the “pile of gravel” that makes up part of the Mitterberg. The other part of the Mitterberg, as a foothill of the Kulm, consists of the easily weathered and therefore fertile green slate. The densely wooded Mitterberg is around 800 m high and approx. 10 km long. Due to its low altitude, there is a magnificent view from Mitterberg-St. Martin in a south-westerly direction of the Niedere Tauern mountains, which are covered in snow well into the summer.

The new municipal area has comprised nine villages since the end of 2014: Diemlern, Gersdorf, Mitterberg, Oberlengdorf, Salza, Sankt Martin am Grimming, Strimitzen, Tipschern and Unterlengdorf.

The romantic Salza reservoir is located in the village of St. Martin am Grimming, about which a newspaper writes: "Not everything that has been made by human hands is rejected by nature conservationists. Example: The Salza power station near St. Martin am Grimming. As early as 1948, technology and nature were tastefully combined."
