A rural village with a population of 1,169, straddling two valleys (the Arve Valley to the south and the Giffre Valley to the north), Châtillon sur Cluses owes its name, like all the other "Châtillons" in France, to the castle that was the favourite residence of the Sires du Faucigny. This remarkable site is currently the subject of a major renovation and enhancement project.

To the north of Châtillon sur Cluses lies the natural gateway to the Vallée du Giffre, its resorts and ski area. The main town, situated on the pass at an altitude of 732 m, is not only the birthplace of skier Maxime Pezet but was also the favourite residence of the Sires du Faucigny.
Today, all that remains of the majestic castle built in the 10th century are the base of the two towers, which are overgrown with vegetation, the church and a section of wall, but the site is now the subject of a major renovation project and a well-deserved facelift!
