One could in principle start right from the shore of Lake Maggiore at Locarno, at barely 200 meters altitude. Yet a funicular, an aerial cableway, and a chairlift spare us the first 1500 meters of ascent. The experience of the Via Alta Vallemaggia thus begins on the panoramic Cimetta – a summitlet compared to what still awaits us. After a leisurely pause, we turn our backs on the bustling lakescape of the Verbano and set off on the great adventure that will lead us directly into the heart of the Ticino Alps over several days. The first stage presents itself as a worthy start, a long ride over ridges and slopes between Vallemaggia and Verzasca. At the end of a memorable day, the Capanna Nimi welcomes us, where two ancient, precious alpine traditions are lived and cherished: goat farming and hospitality.

The Via Alta Vallemaggia partly follows mountain hiking trails (T3), partly alpine path traces (T4-T5–). Here and there short sections with risk of falling and easy climbing passages must be overcome. The trickiest parts are often secured with chains and handholds.
Some huts already open in June, when the connecting stages are often still snow-covered. The best season generally lasts from July to September/October. But even in high summer it is recommended to contact the hut wardens and ask about current conditions. Reservation in the huts is mandatory to avoid unpleasant surprises and secure a sleeping place.
The necessary prerequisites are:
Good experience in alpine environment Sufficient physical condition Detailed planning (current conditions, weather, etc.) Sure-footedness in pathless terrain and freedom from vertigo
Not to underestimate:
Altitude Sudden weather changes Snowfields (especially early season) Stage length (especially for larger groups) Often patchy mobile network coverage No drinking water sources on some stages
Emergency number in Switzerland (REGA): 1414
International emergency number: 112
When calling 112, you will be directly connected to the responsible rescue unit (medical, police, fire brigade). The GSM emergency number 112 can also be dialed with a locked SIM card or locked device. Emergency number 112 is valid in almost all countries with GSM networks. Outside Switzerland it works even without a SIM card.
In case of emergency:
Keep a cool head Protect injured and affected persons from further danger, weather, and cold Provide first aid Alert rescue forces and initiate the rescue. Do not leave injured persons alone Do not forget your own safety
