Today, the nature reserve is characterised by extensive rough grazing land, Beech forests, stream-fringing Alder and Ash woods and dwarf shrub heathland. Like in Apricke, the pastures are "maintained" by Heck cattle. The characteristic bird of the Stilleking area is the Meadow Pipit. In good years, the cattle pasture is home to a dozen breeding pairs of this ground-nesting species, which has become rare throughout Germany. Other avifauna rarities are Honey Buzzard, Black Stork and Grey-headed, Black and Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers. Among the rare plants that have survived here are Heath Milkwort, Sheep's Bit Scabious, Marsh Valerian and Yellow Spreader.

The supplementary route is north of the "Ochsentour" trail and leads to other attractive parts of the area. From the car park in the Neuenhofer Valley, the trail initially leads in a southward direction.
To protect the breeding Meadow Pipits it is particularly(!) important to always keep dogs on a lead during the spring and summer months.
