For 26 years, from 1747 to 1773, the Mozart family lived on the third floor of the "Hagenauer Haus" in Getreidegasse No. 9, where the "music wonder" Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on 27 January 1756.

The house is named after its owner and friend the Mozarts, the merchant Johann Lorenz Hagenauer (1712-1792).

A museum in Getreidegasse 9
On 15 June 1880, the International Mozart Foundation for the first time established a museum in Mozart's birthplace. The museum has been systematically renovated and expanded in recent decades and has thus become a cultural meeting place that attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world to Salzburg every year.
In Mozart's birthplace, visitors are guided through original Mozart rooms, which contain historical instruments, documents, memorabilia and the majority of portraits made during his lifetime. For example, the "unfinished" oil painting "Mozart at the piano" painted by Mozart's brother-in-law Joseph Lange in 1789. Among the famous exhibits are Mozart's children's violin, his clavichord, portraits and letters of the Mozart family.

Mozart's Instruments
The musical instruments exhibited in Mozart's birthplace came into the possession of the International Mozarteum Foundation by Mozart's widow, Constanze Nissen (1762-1842) and her sons Carl Thomas (1784-1858) and Franz Xaver Wolfgang (1791-1844). In 1994, the Mozart apartment was carefully restored and redesigned by the Viennese architect Prof. Elsa Prochazka using state-of-the-art museum technology to protect the exhibits from possible damage.

Mozart at the theatre
The second floor of Mozart's birthplace is dedicated to the theme "Mozart on the theatre". Numerous dioramas, miniature stages, illustrate the history of the reception of Mozart's operas. Stage models from the late 18th to the 20th century demonstrate the diverse forms of interpretation. On the first floor of Mozart's birthplace, the International Mozarteum Foundation has been presenting annually changing special exhibitions on the theme of "Mozart" since 1981.

Three new exhibitions
The three exhibitions "Alltag eines Wunderkindes", "Mozart auf dem Theater" and "Die Mozarts - eine Familie stellt sich vor" were set up by the architect and caricaturist of the Salzburger Nachrichten, Thomas Wizany. The focus is on original Mozart instruments and authentic portraits. Also on display are Salzburg furniture and everyday objects from Mozart's time.
